2008 - May

OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS STATE CONVENTION is being hosted by the Diocese of Salina on May 2-5 in Hays. The principal convention Mass will be Sunday, May 4 at St. Fidelis in Victoria.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION will be observed on Sunday, May 4, 2008

THE 42nd ANNUAL WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY will be observed on May 4, 2008.  The USCCB is committed to supporting the goals of this observance through the Catholic Communications Campaign which aids the work of evangelization by producing values-driven messages spread through the mass media.  The Diocese makes a contribution to the CCC with an allocation from the Catholic Community Annual Appeal.  CCAA supports many very important good works, including wholesome media!

THE CLERGY HEALTH AND RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION annual luncheon for priests age 65 and older will be on either Tuesday, May 6th at Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish Hall or on Wednesday, May 7th at St. Fidelis Friary, Victoria.  Both are at 11:30 a.m.  RSVP’s were due April 28, 2008.

RELIGIOUS SISTERS APPRECIATION MASS will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral with a luncheon following in the Hall of Bishops. RSVP’s are due by Monday, May 5, 2008.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND GLOBAL LIVING ROSARY, sponsored by the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas will be held at Kauffman stadium (Royals) in Kansas City, MO on Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m.  All are encouraged to come and pray for peace within our families, our nation and our world, as well as being a living witness of God’s love and mercy. Admission and parking are free.  Please continue to promote this event in your parish.  For complete information, go to www.eucharisticfamilyrosary.com.  Enclosed are some special bulletin inserts for your consideration.

DEACON NICHOLAS PARKER WILL BE ORDAINED to the priesthood at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 24th at Sacred Heart Cathedral.  A reception and luncheon will follow.  Father Parker will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 25 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Goodland.  All are invited.

THE BISHOP FITZSIMONS GOLF TOURNAMENT is scheduled for July the 10-11.  Please contact the Development Office at Sacred Heart Jr. Sr. High school for more information 825-4011.

PARISH PASTORAL VISITS – All parishes have now either completed or have scheduled their pastoral visit to be completed by the end of this calendar year.  Thank you for your care in preparing and hosting these visits.  They have been a great benefit in helping me come to a better understanding of each parish’s unique situation as well as many common concerns throughout our diocese.

PARISH REQUEST FORM FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION will be sent with the June SDNB.  No finalized dates will be set until after all the forms have been received and the schedule is completed.  When preparing for Confirmation, please do not forget to return the Confirmation Liturgy Form (can be reproduced from the new Diocesan Handbook) at least seven days prior to the date for Confirmation along with the letters from the confirmandi.  Please remember that unless your parish expects 10 confirmandi it would be preferable not to plan on an annual celebration of Confirmation.  In this case it would be preferable to plan for Confirmation every other year, or every third year depending on the size of the group.

WHEN REMODELING SANCTUARIES  Pastors and Parish Life Coordinators should keep in mind that any remodeling project, even with minor expenditure, which involves a liturgical dimension or which would affect the liturgical space should seek advice and/or approval from the diocesan liturgy office and the bishop.  For further information, see the “Guidelines for Major Remodeling Projects and Construction of Buildings” in the Diocesan Policy Handbook (Blue Book), Section V, page 12.

OFFICE OF THE VICAR GENERAL

INVITATION TO BISHOP COAKLEY'S SILVER JUBILEE:   All Catholics in the diocese and their families are invited to Bishop Coakley's 25th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood beginning with Mass at 3:30 P.M. on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina.  A reception will follow the Mass in the cathedral's Hall of Bishops until 6:00 P.M.  Priests, please bring your diocesan vestments for the Mass and please turn in your RSVP for the dinner count by May 5th if you plan to attend.

UPDATED BIO-DATA SHEETS FOR PRIESTS:  Thanks to those priests who have fulfilled Bishop Coakley's directive to update their personal biographical information and official legal documents for decisions regarding healthcare, finances and wills.  Over thirty-five priests have returned their forms.  For those who have not returned them, please fill them out and send them to Fr. Randall Weber at the Office of the Vicar General by June 30, 2008.  Thank you.

MISSING MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION:  The chancery is missing a number of completed pre-nuptial forms from a few parishes where marriages (presumably) took place over the last several years.  Two reminders have been sent to applicable parishes within the last eleven months.  Please turn in this paperwork as soon as possible so that parishioners' rights are protected and pastoral duty is fulfilled.

NEW JURIDIC PERSONS:  The diocese has recently erected the Diocesan Deposit & Loan Fund, the St. Joseph Fund and The Register Fund as not-for-profit corporations under Kansas civil law and public juridic persons under canon law subject to the authority of the Ordinary of the Diocese of Salina.

SERRA CLUB POTLUCK FOR SEMINARIANS:  The seminal Serra Club in Salina is sponsoring a seminarian potluck on May 22, 2008 beginning at 6:00 P.M. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Hall in Salina. Those interested in Serra and its promotion of priestly and religious vocations are invited to attend.

OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

UPDATING MASS TIMES: The national organization called MassTimes provides Mass schedules for Catholic churches across the United States as a service to travelers. This service has the endorsement of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and the USCCB MassTimes requests that parishes periodically update their Mass schedule with them, especially if it has changed within the past year. To update your parish information with them, please contact them via the internet. You can look up your parish on http://www.masstimes.org/dotNet/churchlookups.aspx and then click on the church’s name. You will see below the map the words “update this Church Information.” Click on these words. You will arrive at a screen that has already loaded the ID and you then need to enter your “complete e-mail address.” That will take you to the screen that allows you to edit all the church information. MassTimes may also be contacted at masstimes@aol.com or 617-435-1989.

PRIEST IMPOSTERS AND SUSPENDED PRIESTS: Occasionally the chancery receives notices from the national office which pertain to individuals who are either masquerading as priests (never ordained but wears the clerical clothing) or individuals who were ordained and lost the right to exercise the office for various reasons.  If an individual unknown to you unexpectedly arrives in the parish presenting himself as a priest and wants to ‘help out,’ please contact the chancery office.  I have a running list of the names of individuals who are imposters or for serious reasons have been forbidden to exercise official ministry as a priest.

OFFICE OF FINANCE

MARYMOUNT SCHOLARSHIP AND THE MSGR CLEMENT A KRUSE SCHOLARSHIP:  Now that every parish should have a new Diocesan Handbook (blue book), the forms for these scholarships are in there to be used for making copies for the applicants.  Please make sure that the applicants are using the proper form for the Marymount Scholarships.  There is one for first year applicants and a separate one for those reapplying for additional funds after they have completed their first year of college.
